Learn to be an editor
Mark My Words and Substance and Style. There’s probably no better way to start learning the copyediting profession than to work your way through these two primers put out by EEI Press. If you live in the DC metro area, EEI also offers excellent editing courses.
Copyediting newsletter, online training and certification, and audioconferences. It may be a cliché, but it’s true: Copyediting provides a one-stop-shop for all your training needs. In addition to offering basic instruction in copyediting, their audioconferences discuss some of the most important and recurring issues facing working copyeditors.
EFA courses. The Editorial Freelancers Association provides one-day workshops, seminars, and classroom and online courses designed especially for editorial freelancers. Most classroom courses are held in and around New York City.
Sessions with Don Ranly. If you’re looking for someone to provide corporate training, Don Ranly, a professor at the University of Missouri School of Journalism, offers full-day sessions on grammar, style, and usage, and on writing and editing.
Learn to be a copywriter
IABC Business Writing Conference. If you want to work in corporate communications, this conference is a great investment. You’ll spend a day and a half learning from some of the best writers in the country about writing feature stories, annual reports, newsletters, headlines, speeches, web copy, and more.
Ragan workshops, particularly Advanced Writing and Editing and the Internal Communications Master Class. Lots of stuff you need to know, discussed by engaging presenters.
Shel Holtz webinars on Internet communications and writing for the web. If you want to learn about writing for the web, you may as well learn from the best.
Secrets of Successful Copywriting. Presented by Steve Slaunwhite, this audioconference discusses the fundamentals of writing sales copy. If you don’t want to buy anything, just spend some time studying Steve’s own sales copy … you’ll get the message.
Writing White Papers blog, book, and courses. Expert advice from someone who’s written hundreds of white papers.
Power Writing newsletter, written by Daphne Gray-Grant. Daphne, the self-described Publication Coach, helps writers figure out how to write faster, more easily, and with less stress.
